I watched Melvin put cassava into a machine.

I couldn't help but ask him:
"Finished?"
Melvin told me that before they had this machine, grating cassava manually could take almost 30 minutes.
Now, according to him, the same step takes around five.
So I asked him:
“How much was the machine?”
He answered:
“₱8,000 from TikTok Shop, including shipping.”
That answer surprised me.
Because one month earlier, on an earlier visit, Melvin had shown me something else:
A certificate for an ₱80,000 grant from the Department of Agriculture.
Two numbers from two different visits — but I hadn't expected them to connect in my head like this.
And this is the kind of thing I’ve been noticing more and more in Cebu.
There’s so much happening behind the food we eat.
The farmers.
The producers.
The people processing ingredients long before the food reaches the table.
Sometimes it isn't some huge machine or factory.
Sometimes it’s just finding a small tool that saves a lot of time.

I keep thinking about the order I came across these two numbers — even though they came weeks apart.
