Work With Takumi

A field-based storytelling practice in Cebu.

Three years in Cebu. Bisaya-speaking. Documenting the food, the people, and the stories that might disappear — by going to the place, asking the people who still keep it, and putting it on record.

01 — What a collaboration looks like

Three shapes this has actually taken. Each one has already happened.

01

Field Documentation

Going to the place, asking the people who still make it, verifying what is actually true on the ground, and publishing it as a Case File in the open archive — food, makers, neighbourhoods, local practice. Not a review and not a promotion: a record, written the same way whether the finding is flattering or not.

Precedent on record Formally invited by the Municipality of Ginatilan to document its regional heritage delicacies (Sep 2025) · case files published to the public archive
02

Cultural Presence

Being there in person — festivals, campuses, community events, stages and on-camera appearances. As a guest, a host, a judge, or simply as the documenting participant who stays for the whole thing rather than arriving for the photograph.

Precedent on record Official promotional video, Mactan–Cebu International Airport (Feb 2026) · LYVEFEST, selected by TikTok & Spectrum Media for the sold-out Sinulog season festival (Jan 2026) · Guest and cultural judge, Japanese Sky Lantern Festival at CTU Danao (Apr 2026)
03

Local Access

Three years of living in Cebu and functional Bisaya in the field are what turn a documentary request into an actual conversation — an interview granted, a family willing to talk, a community that already knows the face behind the camera before it shows up.

Precedent on record Japanese (native) · English (conversational) · Bisaya (functional, field use) · Tagalog (basic) — described by Cebu Daily News as a bridge between Japan and Cebuano heritage (May 2026)

03 — What exists in the archive

Formats already published in the open archive — shown as examples of what has been made, not a preset order form.

Case File

A long-form written record published to the public Quest Archive, indexed by place, theme and date, and left up permanently.

published to date
Short-form vertical video

Vertical field footage cut for TikTok and embedded back into the case file, so the clip and the written record point at each other.

25 published case files include embedded vertical video (11 unique clips)
Long-form video

Full investigation episodes on YouTube — the version with the conversations left in, not just the result.

31 published case files include embedded long-form video (15 unique episodes)
Field interviews

On-location interviews with makers, vendors, drivers and organisers, conducted in Bisaya where that is what opens the conversation.

e.g. seven driver interviews, Case File No. 069
Photo & visual documentation

Stills from the field, published alongside each case file rather than staged afterwards.

Published with every case file

Scope, timeline and format are set per collaboration. Tell me what you are working on and what you need, and we will shape it from there.

04 — Why this is hard to replicate

None of this is about production value. It is about who opens the door.

Three years on the ground

Arrived in 2023 for three months and stayed. Cebu is where the work lives, not a destination it flies to.

Bisaya in the field

The language that turns a visitor into a neighbour. It is what makes the second and third answer possible — the ones after the polite one.

Invitations, not pitches

An LGU, a university and Cebu’s leading daily approached the work first. That is a different starting position than a proposal in an inbox.

A public record, not a reel

case files, searchable by place, theme and date, with the findings that contradicted the premise left in. The archive is the portfolio.

Not flown in for the story

Japanese by background, three years into daily life in Cebu — still here after the cameras are put away, which is what keeps the next door open too.

Present when it is not filming day

Typhoon, fire and earthquake relief were documented because the work was already there, not because a campaign called for it.

“An artistic young man from Japan who found his home in the heart of Cebu.”
