I wanted to understand something.
How do you actually build a community?
So I went to a Cinema Night at CityFlats to find out.
At first, I was just asking questions.
“Do you live here?”
The guy I met in the elevator was from Mindanao.
He had come to Cebu to study for an exam and had only been staying here for a few weeks.
Then he introduced me to his two friends.
They were from Mindanao too.
I asked them why they chose to stay here.
“We’re studying here.”
Fair enough.
But I still didn’t understand the community part.
Then he told me:
“Maybe the longer you stay here, the more you connect to people.
Then the more you find new people.”
I thought that was the answer.
Then we started playing Bring Me.
Suddenly, I wasn't asking questions anymore.
I was just laughing,
Playing with people I had met only minutes earlier.
And somehow, the question I came with started answering itself.
Later, they asked how long I had been in Cebu.
“Tulo ka year.”
They looked impressed.
I immediately added:
"Dili pa ko perfect."
Still learning Bisaya.
Still getting things wrong.
That night, the guy had pointed out I'd been in Cebu far longer than I ever planned. I just laughed and said:
"Maybe permanently lol"
Almost three years in the Philippines, and I think I finally understand something.
Maybe community isn't something you build by trying to make people connect.
Maybe you just create a space where people can meet...
and let the connections happen.
That night, I went looking for an answer.
Somehow, I ended up becoming part of it.
Still Learning.
Still Exploring.
One conversation at a time.
Me — "Tulo ka year"
The student — "Tulo ka year daw, really good that's good Bisaya."
Me — "Dili pako perfect. (Not yet perfect)"
I came to CityFlats thinking I already knew what I was looking for. I thought community was something you build — on purpose, one deliberate conversation at a time, which is exactly why I kept asking people questions about it.
Then Bring Me started.
Nobody there was trying to build anything. That was the part I hadn't expected.
Maybe you don't build it at all. Maybe you just create a space where people can meet, and then get out of the way.
When they asked how long I'd been in Cebu, "Tulo ka year" came out easier than I expected — and so did "Dili pa ko perfect" right after it. Still learning. Still getting it wrong. Maybe permanently, like I said earlier that same night, half-joking.
The real discovery wasn't how to build community — it was realizing you only have to create the space and let people meet.
