I wasn't looking for a home.
I was just looking for a bathroom.
While walking through the village, I got separated and realized I needed a CR.
So I asked the nearest person,
"Asa ang CR?"
He didn't explain much.
He just smiled and started walking.
A few minutes later, we arrived at someone's house.
That was where the CR was.
What surprised me wasn't that someone helped me.
It was how normal it felt for everyone.
Nobody acted like they were doing something special.
It was just a small part of everyday life.
After I came back out, he asked,
"Okay ra?"
"Okay."
Then another man looked at me and laughed.
"Akala ko ikaw babae."
(I thought you were a woman.) 😂
We all laughed.
Back home, I would probably search for a convenience store, a gas station, or a public restroom.
Here, I just asked someone.
And somehow, a simple question became a small connection.
Maybe the most memorable moments aren't always the big ones.
Sometimes, they're the moments everyone else thinks are ordinary.
Still Learning.
Still Exploring.
One unexpected conversation at a time.
I've asked strangers for directions before. I've asked for water, for shade, for a phone charger. But I don't think I'd ever asked someone, in a language I'm still barely holding onto, where the bathroom was — and had him walk me straight into someone else's house like it was the easiest question in the world.
Back home, this would probably need an explanation. An apology, maybe. A "sorry to bother you," a knock softened by embarrassment. Here, nobody explained anything, because there was nothing to explain. It made me stop for a second — not because it was strange, but because it wasn't strange to anyone but me.
What stayed with me wasn't the bathroom. It was how ordinary the whole moment felt.
I still don't know if that's just this village, or another piece of the Philippines I'm only beginning to understand.
The real discovery was that, to everyone else, it didn't seem like a favor at all.
