I've been living in Cebu for almost 3 years...
So I thought asking for a coconut would be simple.
I pointed at the tree and asked:
"Butong?"
One person looked up.
Then another stood up.
My host dad grabbed a knife.
Someone climbed the tree.
Before I knew it, everyone was involved.
I thought I was just asking where I could get one coconut.
Somehow, it became everyone's mission.
Someone opened it.
Someone handed it to me.
Someone made sure I tried the meat too.
But the coconut wasn't the thing I remembered most.
It was how naturally people started helping.
No plan.
No one asked them to.
One person started...
and everyone followed.
After almost 3 years in Cebu, moments like this still surprise me.
I came looking for a coconut.
But I found something much harder to find:
people who made me feel like I belonged.
Still Learning.
Still Exploring.
Daghang salamat kaayo 🥥🙏
"Butong" was a word I'd only just learned, a two months earlier, in a different barangay, from a stranger who corrected me mid-sentence. I didn't expect to need it again this soon — and I definitely didn't expect it to do this much.
I pointed at a tree. I said one word. That should have been the whole transaction.
Instead, my host dad was already moving before I finished the sentence. Someone I had barely met was already halfway up the coconut tree before I could even ask if this was necessary. Nobody checked with anybody else first. Nobody organized it. It just happened, the way one domino doesn't decide to fall — it just gets tipped, and the rest is momentum.
By the time the coconut reached my hands, I'd stopped thinking about the coconut. I was thinking about how many people it took to get it there, and how none of them seemed to notice they'd done anything at all.
Maybe being an Explorer doesn't start with finding something extraordinary. Maybe it starts with being curious enough to ask one simple question.
I thought I was being helped by one person. I didn't realize I was being welcomed by everyone.
