I've been living in Cebu for almost 3 years.
So when our multicab suddenly stopped in the middle of nowhere, I thought the story was over before it even started.
We were about 90 minutes away from the resort.
Flat tire.
No idea how long we'd be stuck.
Normally, that would just mean waiting.
Instead, someone pointed at a tiny plant growing beside the road.
"Touch it."
I did.
The leaves folded shut instantly.
Everyone laughed.
"What is it called?"
"Makahiya."
Then someone explained that its English name is often translated as the "shy plant."
I asked if it was a Filipino plant.
They smiled.
"Yes."
Then they started telling me it even has its own story.
I kept asking questions.
Why does it close?
Why is it called that?
What does the story mean?
Somewhere between the jokes about being an introvert and everyone laughing at my questions, I completely forgot we were stranded.
Eventually the tire was fixed.
Someone passed around snacks in the multicab.
We climbed back in and kept driving.
Funny enough...
I don't really remember the flat tire anymore.
I remember the conversations.
The laughter.
And a tiny roadside plant I would've driven past if nothing had gone wrong.
Almost 3 years in Cebu...
and I'm still learning that sometimes the best discoveries only happen when the journey unexpectedly stops.
Still Learning.
Still Exploring.
One unexpected stop at a time.
They called it "Makahiya" — the shy plant. When they explained the meaning behind the name, I joked with one of the guys in the multicab: "Introvert, like you." Everyone laughed. I laughed along too, but the name stuck with me longer than the joke did.
Because somewhere between the flat tire and that tiny plant folding its leaves shut, none of us were actually waiting for the tire to get fixed anymore. We were just talking. Laughing. Passing snacks around like that was the whole point of the trip, not an inconvenience to it.
I never got the actual story behind makahiya — the one they promised to tell me before something else pulled everyone's attention away. I still don't know if it's a folk tale every kid in Cebu grows up hearing, or something specific to that one stretch of road in Argao. Somewhere out there, that story is still unfinished.
The tire got fixed and I barely remember it — what actually stopped the whole multicab was a tiny plant folding its leaves shut the moment someone touched it, and a joke about being "introvert, like you" that turned a breakdown into a conversation.
